๐ง How is the IELTS Test Scored?
๐น Listening & Reading
-
Both sections contain 40 questions
-
Each correct answer earns 1 mark
-
Total raw score (out of 40) is converted to a band score
๐น Writing & Speaking
These sections are assessed by trained IELTS examiners using specific criteria.
๐ Writing Band Descriptors:

-
Task Achievement (Task Response in Task 2)
-
Coherence and Cohesion
-
Lexical Resource (Vocabulary usage)
-
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Each criterion is scored from 1–9, and then an average is taken.

Speaking is also scored using 4 criteria:
-

-
Lexical Resource
-
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
-

All four criteria carry equal weight.
✅ The overall IELTS band score is calculated by taking the average of the four individual section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), and then rounding it to the nearest whole or half band.
