๐ŸŽฏ What is the IELTS Band Score?

IELTS is scored on a band scale from 1 to 9, where:

  • Band 1 = Non-user of English

You receive four individual scores (one for each section: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and an overall band score, which is the average of the four.

๐Ÿง  How is the IELTS Test Scored?

๐Ÿ”น Listening & Reading

  • Both sections contain 40 questions

  • Each correct answer earns 1 mark

  • Total raw score (out of 40) is converted to a band score

๐Ÿ”น Writing & Speaking

These sections are assessed by trained IELTS examiners using specific criteria.

๐Ÿ“ Writing Band Descriptors:

Each task (Task 1 & Task 2) is scored on 4 criteria:

  1. Task Achievement (Task Response in Task 2)

  2. Coherence and Cohesion

  3. Lexical Resource (Vocabulary usage)

  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Each criterion is scored from 1–9, and then an average is taken.

๐Ÿ—ฃ️ Speaking Band Descriptors:

Speaking is also scored using 4 criteria:

  1. Fluency and Coherence

  2. Lexical Resource

  3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

  4. Pronunciation

All four criteria carry equal weight.

The overall IELTS band score is calculated by taking the average of the four individual section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), and then rounding it to the nearest whole or half band.
