🧭 IELTS TEST FORMAT
The IELTS test is divided into four main sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
🔹 1. Listening (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time)
Purpose: To assess your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts.
Format:

4 sections with 40 questions

Each section contains a different type of recording (conversation or monologue)

Topics range from everyday conversations to academic discussions
In stages:--

Listen to each recording once only

Answer questions as you listen

After the audio ends, you’ll get 10 extra minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet (in paper-based test)
🔹 2. Reading (60 minutes)
Purpose: To test your reading comprehension skills using a variety of texts.
Types:

Academic: For higher education or professional registration

General Training: For work, migration, or training
Format:

3 sections with 40 questions

Includes multiple-choice, matching headings, sentence completion, and more
In stages:--

Read 3 different passages (increasing in difficulty)

Answer questions based on understanding, main ideas, and detailed facts

No extra time is given for transferring answers—write them directly on the answer sheet
🔹 3. Writing (60 minutes)
Purpose: To assess your ability to express ideas clearly in written English.
Types:

Academic:

Task 1: Describe a graph, chart, map, or process (150 words)

Task 2: Write an essay presenting an argument or opinion (250 words)

General Training:
-
Task 1: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal)

Task 2: Write an essay (similar to Academic)

In stages:--

Complete Task 1 in around 20 minutes

Spend about 40 minutes on Task 2 (worth more marks)
🔹 4. Speaking (11–14 minutes)
Purpose: To test your spoken English in a face-to-face interview.
Format:

Conducted by a trained examiner

May happen on the same day or within 7 days before/after other parts

Part 1 (4–5 mins) – Introduction and general questions about your life, studies, hobbies, etc.

Part 2 (3–4 mins) – You’ll be given a topic and 1 minute to prepare. Then speak for up to 2 minutes.

Part 3 (4–5 mins) – A discussion related to the topic in Part 2 with more complex questions
